Located in an old buckshot gravel quarry in the northwest Grampians. This double storey farmhouse is arranged along an east-west axis for solar gain and expansive views to the Asses Ears range. Its position and linear layout at the front of the v-shaped quarry creates a courtyard, sheltered from the prevailing southwest winds in winter and frames the well-trodden paths to close friends and existing buildings.
Based around a traditional skillion shed portal frame the house has been designed to meet the Victorian bush fire codes introduced after black Saturday. With a simple and restrained palette the building is robust yet playful. Clad in galvanised iron sheeting the project is grounded to the local and rural vernacular.
