HAWTHORN WALK UP TOWNHOUSES

The walk up townhouses are situated on a hilly corner site in Hawthorn. To avoid the typical development response of cut and fill, two concrete spine walls running the length of the block provide a base for offsite prefabricated living boxes. The development is generously set back from the northern street to provide a highly active park for the residents and street. Private external spaces are created between the rhythmically spaced out living boxes on the first floor.
The ground level contains undercover carpark, entry, storage and laundry. The upper levels house the living and sleeping areas; made private by the raised spaces above the street line. An expansive double height space draws the northern light deep into the buildings footprint while framing the surrounding streetscape. A of row deciduous trees along the northern setback provide shade and screening to the living spaces while raising the view from the mundane street kerb to treetop foliage and sky. This captures the ideal view of the trees while providing a connection to the distant ranges and the communal green spaces below.
Natural timbers, bold primary colours and an abundance of natural light create a warm and inviting interior. Steel louvers and stained vertical shiplap cladding enable the three level townhouses to effortlessly recede into the surrounding site.
A prefabrication process was nominated as an ideal solution for speeding up construction, lowering the material costs, offers greater quality assurance and enhancing affordability.
