NORTHCOTE HOUSE 2

CATEGORY: RESIDENTIAL – ALTERATION AND ADDITION
LOCATION – NORTHCOTE – MELBOURNE
STATUS – COMPLETE
YEAR – 2016

Northcote House 2 is located in the Melbourne suburb of Northcote only a stone’s throw north of the city. The extension and alteration is on a long and narrow block with south facing backyard and secondary rear lane access.

The clients love their heritage frontage but wanted a modern, light filled, double storey addition to the rear. The idea was to create an abundance of open space to contrast with the intimacy of the existing dwelling. By positioning an entertainment area in the form of a roof deck and garden to the northern end of the kitchen clerestory, light can be controlled and utilised throughout the year. This double height space means the central part of the house is activated; creating a large, lung-like effect that encourages the movement of air and natural light deep within the heart of the house. The roof deck, while open to the elements is completely private and offers both connection and seclusion between the active zones of the house. When you look up in the kitchen you’re able to see the overhanging greenery which softens the stark rectangle section of sky while a seasonal clock is initiated by the planting of flora. The garden beds continue to change throughout the year bringing colour, fragrance, and life deep into the heart of the new dwelling.
